Lawyer (different practice areas possible) who thinks outside the box

Imaginative, thoughtful and unique practice platform in search of entrepreneurial, tech savvy, and outside-the-box thinking lawyers in several practice areas.

about us

In the Canadian Bar Association’s first ever National Comprehensive Report on Wellness in the Legal Profession, the harm caused to lawyers by traditional, top-down, billable hour-driven private practice is made crystal clear, and it is all too widely known that those most in need of legal services have limited affordable support available.

At macushlaw, we believe there is a better, more sustainable way to practice, which will result in better outcomes for lawyers and clients alike.

macushlaw is an imaginative and thoughtful ecosystem of lawyers with a common goal: to provide affordable, approachable, top-tier legal services while giving back to the communities we serve.

Our mission is to make legal services more accessible and affordable for clients and to make the practice of law more sustainable for lawyers.

Our purpose is to uplift solo and small firm practitioners through a shared practice infrastructure and community support. Think legal entrepreneurialism on training wheels!

why work with macushlaw

We do things differently. We offer a unique practice platform for those looking for freedom, flexibility, and meaning in their practice. Parents, side-hustlers, part-time practitioners, and practitioners transitioning out of or back into practice are welcome. Many of our lawyers are entrepreneurs themselves.

We value transparency. We report to our lawyers and consult on overhead amounts and operational changes. We also regularly present financial statements to the firm.

We’re a benefit company. We promote positive impact and corporate social responsibility in the following ways:

  • Technology adoption improves access to justice and client experience by reducing administrative costs and friction in intake and service processes.
  • Digital-by-default practice reduces environmental impact and overhead, and improves ease of service and access.
  • Community contributions are both culturally and structurally encouraged.
Equitable pay for lawyers and sustainable practice schedules, no billable targets, and higher per-hour earnings than traditional law jobs.

compensation

Our equitable compensation model is intended to maximize per-hour earnings for our lawyers and, through economies of scale, lower the cost of law firm infrastructure.

Each of our lawyers pays a portion of overhead, and receives the vast majority of collected fees for use of the firm’s practice infrastructure. We invite our team members to participate in determining overhead.

  • Current overhead allocation is $1,500 per month deducted from earnings
  • Current one-time onboarding fee of $1,800 deducted from earnings
  • Commissions are 80%, or 85% if non-billable target met
  • No billable targets (yes, you heard that correctly!)

contractors, not employees

In order to strike the right balance between community and independence, our lawyers are independent contractors, not employees. You control where you work from, when you work, and how you deliver the services, you select your practice areas and business development activities, and we provide you a firm infrastructure, tech stack, practice resources, trust accounting, branding and marketing support, and as much or as little of our unique firm culture as you want.

Team members independently arrange for their own Law Society of British Columbia license and indemnity fees, health insurance and benefits plan, WorkSafe coverage, life and long-term disability insurance, and other typical contractor expenses. To support these needs, we are more than happy to connect you with qualified professionals in our network.

who you are

Our ideal team member will be someone who is entrepreneurial, tech-savvy, and thinks outside the box. We value someone who communicates exceptionally well, strikes a balance between casual and professional, practices generosity in all areas of their lives, and is outspoken about the things that matter to them. Applicants should be well informed about the level of independence afforded on our practice platform and be ready with a plan for developing and maintaining their private practice.

We look forward to receiving applications from those eager to practice in all areas of the law. However, there are some practice areas that we hope to fill so that we can give our clients the best possible service and fulfill their legal needs. These practice areas included: Corporate Law, Real Estate (Conveyance), Litigation, Residential Tenancy Law, Strata Law, Privacy Law, Family Law, Immigration Law, Mental Health Act, and Employment Law.

how to apply

We request a resume, transcripts for new calls (2 years and earlier), and references. We will likely invite you to a few casual interviews; please note that you may be challenged to a game of pinball during this process and, if you win, you will be hired on the spot. Cover letters—especially weird, non-traditional ones—are encouraged but not required. Click here to get started
