As Legal Counsel at Vancity, your purpose will be to support the business of Vancity and its subsidiaries, to mitigate legal risk and provide corporate commercial legal advice. This role reports to a Legal Director, and through the VP General Counsel and Corporate Secretary to the CEO.

This competitively rewarded role will enjoy hybrid working arrangements and will enjoy hybrid working arrangements from a flexible combination of the Vancity head office location and your British Columbia based home office.Periodically, in person events or activities will be required.

 
A typical day will involve:

  • Partnering with the business to provide legal advice, reduce risk and enable business operations.
  • Having extensive subject matter expertise knowledge and providing practical legal advice.
  •  Maintaining robust knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, best practice, and industry standards to provide internal guidance and ensure compliance.
  • Cultivating a deep understanding of Vancity’s business needs and providing proactive, solution-oriented advice.
  • Researching, negotiating, drafting, and reviewing various types of legal agreements.
  • Assisting the business in proactively identifying legal issues and mitigating against risk.
  • Providing timely, responsive, and proactive legal advice enabling Vancity to make business decisions with a clear and well-informed understanding of any related legal risks and impacts at both the business unit and enterprise level.
  • Identifying opportunities to continuously improve the service delivery model for legal services that is aligned to business and strategic goals.
  • Managing legal projects, including those related to strategic initiatives and business goals.
  • Providing support to other lawyers on the team including General Counsel.
 
You have:
  • Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ relevant experience
  • Member in good standing of Law Society of British Columbia
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Commercial law expertise and experience with the financial services industry.
  • Assets would include knowledge and experience in labour and employment and litigation.

Active Participant – share knowledge of law and industry best practice with other lawyers and legal support staff, ask and follow up on good questions, active part of team knowledge and culture-building through messaging and meetings.

Negotiator – may negotiate with opposing counsel, vendors, service providers, contractors, government or community partners – must maintain firm but collaborative approach.

Expert – You are constantly seeking to gain knowledge that is relevant to your role and to apply it in effective ways.

A Decisive Team Player – self-motivated, willing to share and collaborate, yet capable of making decisions and adjudicating within the scope of Vancity’s policy and procedures.

Solutions-oriented – you have a growth mindset and approach new and challenging situations with a “how might we” attitude

An Investigator & Problem Solver- You have a natural curiosity and analytical eye to review information, detect anomalies, and investigate and resolve discrepancies.

Representative – able to represent Vancity and the legal team with knowledge and integrity when participating in industry and legal groups and committees, including the Canadian Bar association, CCUA, counsel networking, and any external board and committee work.
