Senior Legal Counsel (Labour/Employment Law)

Are you a practical and strategic labour and employment lawyer? Do you strive for excellence and results in representing clients in litigation? Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer, you will represent the LCBO at the Grievance Settlement Board and other administrative bodies and provide labour and employment law support to a variety of internal clients.

What’s the role about?


  • Supporting the operations of the LCBO by providing legal advice on the full range of labour and employment matters.
  • Assessing and communicating legal risk while collaborating on the development of business strategies.
  • Representing the LCBO at labour arbitration, human rights proceedings, and labour board proceedings.

What will you bring to the team?
  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL. B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • 3 to 8 years of post-call experience dealing with a focus on employment and labour law matters, gained from a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Exceptional business judgement, relationship-building skills, and creativity.
  • Ability to take leadership of and manage legal projects and a busy litigation schedule.
  • Practical, solutions-oriented, problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to present issues, options, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent litigation, negotiation and drafting skills.
  • Experience managing multiple priorities, stakeholders, and deadlines.
  • Solid legal training and pragmatic experience in labour and employment law matters.
  • Experience in any of the following specific areas, while not mandatory, should be highlighted in your cover letter:
    • experience in representing retail and/or public institutions
    • experience in human resources
    • related post-secondary education in human resources or industrial relations.
