Reporting to a partner and joining our team of 11 professionals across the country, the successful candidate will provide support and/or consulting services to internal and external clients. The position is based out of Fredericton but we would be willing to consider applicants based in other Canadian locations, particularly those with a LifeWorks retirement consulting practice.

Responsibilities (increasing With Experience)
- Guidance and support to consultants, clients and pension administrators on legislative, case law and other industry developments
- Compliance of client pension plans with pension standards and Income Tax Act requirements
- Reports, presentations, and plan documentation for existing and prospective clients
- All aspects of plan wind-ups and administration of pension plans as a result of employer reorganization or de-risking (e.g., Sears, Nortel Networks)
- Strategic design and implementation of special projects – for example, plan mergers, wind-ups, reviews and audits of plan governance, drafting of governance documentation, pension committee training and surplus withdrawal applications
- Support for pension governance and investment management, including ESG factors
- Development of innovative new products in retirement savings and financial well-being
- Updating the LifeWorks (formerly Morneau Shepell) Handbook of Canadian Pension and Benefit Plans and other LifeWorks publications
- Working on international mandates in the Caribbean and elsewhere in pension law, insurance law and compensation consulting
- Communicating with regulatory authorities
- Managing multiple client files and projects
- Monitoring industry topics and trends
- Participating in industry organizations (e.g., OBA, CPBI, ACPM)
- Delegation and peer review, where appropriate
Success Requires The Following Core Qualifications And Skills
- We are looking for a lawyer with 5+ years of experience in pensions (experience in insolvency, employment, labour, privacy, and/or tax law will also be an asset):
- A positive attitude, with strong leadership and team building skills
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex information
- Exceptional writing and research skills; detail oriented
- Exceptional client focus with strong professional acumen
- Excellent communication, project management and presentation skills
- Highly organized, with an ability to take initiative and be independent
- French language skills would be an advantage
- Call to the Bar and good standing in a Canadian common law jurisdiction
