Job Title: Supervising Lawyer, Education
Terms: Full-time (35 hours per week)
Salary Range: $105,000 - $110,000 per annum plus health benefits
Location: Vancouver, BC

Job Purpose The supervising lawyer (Education) shares responsibility with the supervising lawyer for the Student Legal Clinic for teaching, mentoring, and supervising law students in the delivery of family law representation while ensuring quality legal services to clients. In addition, the supervising lawyer (Education) shares responsibility with the education manager in the creation, and delivery of Rise’s paid training products. The purpose of the proposed social enterprise is to diversify the revenue stream for the organization to ensure long-term sustainability. ________________________________________________________________________
Responsibilities: Student Legal Clinic In collaboration with the supervising lawyer:
• Teaches, mentors and supervises all aspects of student client files and work including: o addressing ethical and file management issues o providing legal advice o proofreading and editing student file work o communication with clients o assisting with negotiations o preparing for and appearing in court • Represents clients directly between school terms and on complex files.
• Provides accurate time-keeping records, statistical information and activity reports, and carries out such further administrative responsibilities as may be required by Rise’s Executive Director.
• Provides strategic input into processes for legal service delivery, including identifying ways to make programs more accessible to diverse clients.
• Participates in Rise evaluation initiatives as required.
• Assists with grading academic papers in consultation with other adjunct professors and provides written feedback to students on both academic work and clinical performance.
Responsibilities: Social Enterprise
In collaboration with the education manager, provides strategic direction for Rise’s social enterprise. The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Creating an annual workplan including deliverables, timelines, training offerings, pricing for the social enterprise
• Consulting with Rise staff to plan paid training offerings (online and in-person) to legal professionals
• Collaborating with the Financial Manager to streamline financial processes associated with the social enterprise
• Reviewing and organizing existing lawyer training presentations and courses
• Creating targeted, relevant, and CPD accredited learning opportunities (online and in-person) for legal professionals
• Reviewing marketing and communication related to the release of training offerings
• Building and maintaining connections with law firms and organizations in BC to provide paid training courses
• Leading or co-leading training courses as agreed upon on the workplan
• Optimizing use of Rise’s e-learning platform (Thinkific) to meet the requirement of the social enterprise.
• Tracking metrics and collating data for the Fund Development Manager. _______________________________________________________________________
Working Conditions
• Full-time position, 35 hours per week.
• In-person work environment; hybrid work arrangements may be available when in-person attendance is not required for the student supervision.
• Physical aspects: sitting for extended periods of time and use of computer.
• Psychological aspects: communicating with team members, organization of work related to supervising students, collaborating with partners and stakeholders, overseeing legal services of client files, incorporating a trauma-informed approach with clients. ________________________________________________________________________
Reporting Relationships
• Reports to the Executive Director.
• Along with the supervising lawyer for the Student Legal Clinic, provides legal supervision for up to six upper-year law students (per term)
• May act as principal for up to three law students on temporary articles (per term) subject to year of call and Law Society approval ________________________________________________________________________
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)
Professional Certifications: Licensed to practice law in British Columbia Eligible to be appointed Adjunct Professor by the Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia.
Experience: Practiced family law for 5 or more years Experience in adjacent areas of law (asset) Overseeing and working on multiple client files, with limited resources Working with women and gender diverse people who have experienced violence (asset) Teaching and mentoring students (asset) Experience in training legal professionals
Knowledge: Expertise in family law essential; experience in adjacent areas of law an asset Understanding use and safety features of various technologies to deliver virtual legal services (asset) Knowledge of legal resources in BC (asset)
