| What we are looking for
 
Reporting to the Director, Legal Affairs & Senior Legal Counsel, the Legal Counsel functions as part of a collegial team and provides strategic and business oriented legal analysis and advice to Payments Canada relating to its statutory mandate and legal framework, its general business affairs and day-to-day operations, and its key projects. As a trusted team player, the Legal Counsel adapts quickly to take on new challenges in a fast-paced environment, maintaining high standards for their work, and sharing thoughtful and solution focused advice clearly and concisely with both legal and non-legal colleagues. 
 
 
| A day in the life
 
Responsibilities of the Legal Counsel includes but not is not limited to:
 
Strategic and Solution-Focused Advice
 
  • Providing strategic and solution focused legal advice and services in a fast-paced environment.
  • Negotiating and drafting various commercial contracts in support of both businesses as usual work and projects.
  • Supporting the development and amendment of policies and and other documents (internal and public-facing).
  • Advising on Payments Canada’s mandate, legal framework, and payments law matters, including the development of by-laws and rules.
  • Providing timely ad-hoc advice on various matters including employment, intellectual property, information technology, and more.  
Collaboration and Process Improvement
 
  • Sharing legal knowledge and supporting both legal and non-legal peers and promoting collaboration between people and teams.
  • Helping to continuously improve legal team processes and enhance efficiency while maintaining high standards and culture of helpfulness.
| What you need to be successful 
 
  • Baccalaureate of Laws (LL.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.).
  • Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of post-call corporate law experience in a law firm or in-house/corporate counsel position.
  • Experience in drafting and interpreting legislation, by-laws, rules and standards, and organizational policies.
  • Experience in reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with business partners, clients or stakeholders.
  • Ability to accommodate occasional travel, as required.
  • Ability to work out of our Toronto or Ottawa offices.
  • Eligibility to successfully complete background checks that will be carried out by Payments Canada, including criminal, credit, identity, employment, and education checks.

  • Bilingualism (English and French) is considered an asset.
  • Experience in financial services and with federally-regulated entities is considered an asset.
 
| Salary range
 
  • Based on qualifications and experience:  $112,364 and $172,126.
