As Employment Compliance Counsel you will support the company’s North American operations, providing day-to-day employment advice and counseling, with an emphasis on compliance.  The Employment Compliance Counsel reports to the Deputy General Counsel – People, and sits with the Patagonia Legal and Compliance team in Ventura, CA. What You’ll Do:

  • Deliver high quality, human-centered legal advice, grounded in equity and justice, in the labor & employment practice area.
  • Ensure the company complies with all relevant federal and state employment laws and regulations. Act as the subject matter expert who is continually staying abreast of changes in state and federal employment laws and regulations. Examples of oversight include but are not limited to: Wage and Hour, Leave and Accommodation laws, ADA, EEOC, FEHA .
  • Fields questions from cross functional partners and provides agile, timely solution-oriented advice on compliance issues and advises on strategies on achieving compliant practices where deficiencies are identified. 
  • Serves as the legal point of contact for all policy review. Develops process for routing, approval and approval for policies across the organization.  Responsible for handbook updates and amendments.
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential compliance issues and develop strategies to mitigate these risks. Manage audits related to various compliance topics across the organization.
  • Provide training and support to employees on compliance-related topics, ensuring they understand and adhere to relevant regulations. Establish regular schedule for compliance training as well as regular review and update of training materials. 
  • Work closely with People, Culture & Justice department and other cross functional stakeholders to ensure seamless compliance across the organization.
  • Support the Deputy General Counsel – People, with investigation of employee complaints, litigation management and reporting.  Support the wider Patagonia Legal and Compliance department on a variety of legal issues and assignments on non-employment law related topics, special projects and novel questions of law.

Experience You Bring:

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to a state bar in good standing, ideally in California or New York.
  • 2 years of in-house or law firm experience in the Labor and Employment areas of law with demonstrated experience advising multi-state, national employers on compliance related topics.
  • Detailed knowledge of employment regulations and legal frameworks. Subject matter expertise in California wage and hour regulations is a plus.
  • Proficiency in compliance management, risk assessment, and policy drafting and review.
  • Experience in identifying compliance issues and developing strategies to address them.
  • High level of comfort working with technology and systems.

Hiring range: $150,000 to $165,000 USD

At Patagonia, pay ranges are assigned to a job based on the location specific market median of similar jobs according to 3rd party salary benchmark surveys. Individual pay within that range can vary for several reasons including skills/capabilities, experience, and available budget. Note the full pay range for this role ranges from: $132,000 – $198,000 USD. The Hiring Range reflects where in the range we intend to hire for this role.
