The Opportunity:
The Legal Counsel will be a key part of Parkland’s dynamic legal team. This is a unique opportunity to support a broad range of business initiatives, including: Parkland's petroleum product supply and trading portfolio, commercial arrangements, asset purchases and sales, and other strategic projects across North America.
Responsibilities:
- Draft, review, negotiate and advise on a range of commercial contracts and transactions in support of business objectives, including those related to petroleum supply, commodity trading, services agreements, transportation and logistics and asset purchases and sales.
- Advise business clients on commercial and regulatory risk relating to business operations and transactions.
- Provide legal support and advise on complex commercial transactions and day-to-day operational issues in all areas of the business across North America.
- Act as a business partner to internal clients to provide guidance and support for a variety of strategic business initiatives, issues and objectives.
- Effectively manage a broad portfolio of responsibilities and internal client relationships.
- Liaise with external counsel in both Canada and the U.S. on specialized legal matters as necessary, ensuring effective and cost-efficient use of external resources.
Requirements:
- 5 or more years’ experience in commercial law in a well-regarded law firm or an in-house role.
- Knowledge of and experience with commodities contracts and commodities trading regulations would be an asset.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school, Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), or equivalent degree.
- Must be a lawyer who is a member of the Law Society of Alberta or the Law Society of another Canadian province.
- Team player adept at developing collaborative relationships across the organization.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-up.
- Ability to work under pressure, resolve problems and make decisions quickly and effectively, using a strong sense of self confidence.
- Adaptability: Project management skills including the ability to work on various projects and prioritize accordingly in a fast-paced environment.
- Initiative: Independent assessment and evaluation of various issues and deficiencies and ability to find effective solutions using creativity, resourcefulness and expertise.
- High energy: Self-motivated with the ability to effectively manage concurrent projects.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and sound legal and business judgement.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.
