What you will do
The Officer, Legal and Risk position provides analysis, advice and guidance on the application and interpretation of legislation, regulations and applicable policies.

The Officer prepares a wide range of documentation related to diverse matters of interest to TOH with respect to the application, interpretation, and compliance with law.

The Officer will work collaboratively and effectively with stakeholders to protect TOH from potential and actual negative reputational and financial impacts associated with non-compliance with law

What you will bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Health Administration, Health Sciences, Social Sciences or a related field;
  • Called to the Bar;
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience working in a law firm, business or healthcare environment;
  • Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years' work experience, preferably in a legal counsel role in law firm or in-house environment;
  • Knowledge of privacy management practice and health law (i.e.: legislation; Information Privacy Commissioner complaints and regulatory colleges investigations, etc.);
  • Knowledge of legislation/regulations and awareness of judicial decisions impacting privacy management (including Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Public Hospitals Act, Coroner's Act, Mental Health Act);
  • Knowledge of protocols when working within office and when dealing with management and other senior stakeholders;
  • Knowledge of methods, techniques and practices related to general administration, support planning and coordination;
  • Knowledge of privacy, legal and corporate governance best practices and an understanding of emerging trends and issues;
  • Experience in drafting and revising legal documents (e.g., contracts, legal opinions);
  • Experience in organizing and preparing a variety of documents, reports and presentations;
  • Experience managing projects/cases and providing status reports;
  • Understanding of the mandates, roles and responsibilities of the hospital and the sector:
  • Experience in implementing and monitoring processes for filing and tracking tasks;
  • Excellent oral, written, empathic listening, communication and presentation skills in order to deliver or facilitate effective training;
  • Strong interpersonal, coaching, counselling, negotiation, mediation and dispute resolution;
  • Excellent analytical, planning and problem-solving skills;
  • Computer skills (word processing, email, manipulate data for report generation and graphics presentation);
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization and time-management skills, ability to multitask and deal with multiple competing deadlines and priorities;
  • A high level of motivation, strong work ethic and self-starting attitude;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment;
  • Strong drafting skills, including drafting correspondence, presentations, briefs and legal documents;
  • Eligible to work in Canada.

You will stand out with:
  • Master's degree in Health Informatics, Health Administration, Business Law, Computer Science or related discipline;
  • Membership in a privacy or security association (e.g. International Association of Privacy Professionals, designations such as CIPP / C or CIPP / IT, etc.);
  • Experience in public and administrative law, administrative investigations and machinery of government;
  • Currently licensed to practice law in a province or territory of Canada.
