About the job
The incumbent will serve as a legal business partner to Kia Canada and provide support to the General Counsel of Kia Canada. Areas of responsibility include (1) carriage and management of litigation files at various levels of court, tribunals, and arbitrations; and (2) review and negotiation of contracts and proficient legal advice to business units within the organization.
 
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail are required. This role is suitable for a self-starter who is comfortable and confident in a fast-paced environment. Excellent research, drafting and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to prioritize competing demands is essential.

Responsibilities
  • Conducting investigations, drafting pleadings/correspondence on litigation files;
  • Providing direction to external counsel on class actions, attending discoveries, hearings, mediations and settlements;
  • Conducting fact gathering and analysis of pre-litigation matters;
  • Working closely with the Paralegal to efficiently and effectively settle CAMVAP/NADAP, subrogation and arbitration matters;
  • Providing strategic legal advice and support to various business teams, including Sales and Marketing, Dealer Development, Finance, IT, Customer Experience etc., on projects, and policies with a view toward risk management and best business practices.
  • Negotiating, drafting, reviewing contracts and advising business leads on the legal ramifications of such agreements.
  • Managing outside counsel and providing support related to product liability litigation, commercial litigation, class actions and arbitration (NADAP, CAMVAP) and small claims court litigation.
  • Supporting escalated customer complaints.
  • Representing Kia Canada at industry meetings.
  • Liaising with Kia Corporation (U.S and Korea) legal team members abroad.
  • Engaging in legal research and staying informed of relevant legal developments affecting the automotive industry.

Skills / Knowledge / Experience / Education Required
  • Professional graduate degree in Law (J.D. or L.L.B.).
  • Licensed member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario. Excellent legal and business judgment and analysis.
  • 3 + years of experience in corporate/commercial law and litigation in an in-house environment and/or leading law firm. 
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Proven management, communication, and administration skills.
  • Strong formal advocacy and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of professionalism.
  • Excellent organization, time management and prioritization skills to manage high volume of projects with competing deadlines. 
  • Excellent verbal and written skills (English, some French preferred).
  • Experience within the automotive industry would be considered a strong asset.
  • Fluency in French would be considered a strong asset.
