Labour Lawyer and Employment Litigator 1-5 year call

Labour Lawyer and Employment Litigator 1-5 year call

Looking to develop your labour law and/or employment litigation practice? We are hiring two lawyers to join our balanced and fun workplace law practice. We are looking for lawyers who are excited to conduct hearings and trial work or enthusiastic to work towards that goal. Candidates are welcome to apply to one or both positions, with a separate application to each.

Our labour law group has a growing number of union and management clients in BC and Alberta, including in the policing, health, local government, and retail sectors. Yes, you read that right – we are not only on one side or the other. We enjoy balance in our practice and our focus is on fairness and respect. Our ideal Labour Lawyer candidate has a demonstrated interest in labour law hearing work and some experience with labour arbitration and/or Labour Board matters.

Our employment litigation practice is busy and growing, representing employers and workers in BC and Alberta. We are growing our litigation practice with an intentional focus on fun and sustainability. Our ideal employment litigator candidate has a demonstrated interest in employment litigation and some experience with civil litigation before the BCSC or other courts and administrative tribunals including the BCHRT.

Our firm has identified labour law and employment litigation as a focus for investment over the next 3 years, which means lots of opportunities for interesting work, mentorship and professional development. While we are looking for lawyers with a focus on each of these areas, anyone who joins our firm can get involved in any of our workplace law practice areas, including workplace investigations, mediation, and StandUP Teams™ training facilitation.

We serve our community best by reflecting its diversity. We welcome applications from candidates from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lived experiences, and from members of groups that are underrepresented in the legal profession.

Our core values are:
  • Heart – We put our hearts into our work.
  • Kindness – We stand alongside our colleagues, clients, and community, empowering them to make confident decisions.
  • Courage – Fierce advocates, we are relentlessly innovative and find creative ways to solve problems and improve access to justice.

Candidates can expect from us:
  • Community & giving. We support our lawyers to give back through pro bono work, public legal education, and other local volunteer work.
  • Inclusion. We are committed to making our practice inclusive, equitable, and accessible – for our team and also for our clients.
  • Sustainable work. We believe that lawyers should have control over their practices and their lives. It is life-work balance here, not work-life. We do our best work for our clients when we can decide how much work to take on, and what type of files will be our focus.
  • Flexibility. We have lawyers working successfully in a variety of arrangements – full-time, part-time, contract work and remote work are all proven options. Our lawyers set their own schedules.

Our ideal candidate:
You are a labour lawyer and/or civil litigator who is called to the bar in BC and open to advising employer, employee and union clients. For the employment litigator role, experience in employment litigation is a significant asset. Experience with practice in Alberta is also an asset. You have at least 1-5 years’ experience in labour law and/or civil litigation (employment litigation preferred). We have no maximum experience in mind and welcome more experienced applicants.

To fit in here, you need to practice from a place of respect and care for coworkers, clients, and other members of our communities, and be ready to have some fun at work. In-office or hybrid/remote work are both fine, with some in-office time encouraged for mentorship purposes. We have offices in Surrey and a new office about to open in Vancouver (at Cambie & 8th). You must be available to appear in court or hearings in person in the lower mainland as required. We are open to full-time or part-time work and offer a comprehensive group benefits package. Assuming full time work, our salary range for 1-3 years is $90,000 to $120,000, and for 3-5 years is $100,000-$150,000 which can be prorated for part time or flexible schedule, plus bonus eligibility.
