Are you a lawyer interested in working for a progressive health care union with a large and diverse membership, and a broad social justice mandate?

The Hospital Employees’ Union is looking for an experienced individual to fill the position of In-House Legal Counsel at its provincial office in Burnaby, British Columbia. The position is for a 12-month term, with the possibility of an extension.

Our work is diverse and challenging. The position is responsible for representing the union before courts, arbitration boards, the Labour Relations Board and other administrative tribunals, providing legal advice and training to staff, providing legal support to legislative and policy reform initiatives and strategizing with the legal team on significant issues affecting the union. The position reports to the union’s General Counsel.

Requirements
• A member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia, ideally with at least 2-5 years of post-law school legal experience.
• A demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.
• Excellent legal research, analytical and written and oral communication skills.
• A demonstrated ability to provide high-quality work under tight deadlines.
• Ability to drive ideas, collaborate and manage initiatives.
• The following would be considered an asset:
o understanding of the labour movement and issues impacting the health care sector;
o knowledge of labour, employment, human rights and/or administrative law;
o experience providing summary legal advice and opinions;
o litigation experience before courts, arbitration boards and/or administrative tribunals; and
o experience providing training for non-lawyers.

This is a unionized position. Compensation is based on a collective agreement and includes a 72-hour fortnight and generous vacation time and benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan. The current annual salary for this position is $116,400.96. A valid BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required, as is the ability to travel throughout the province.
