Job Summary
Continue to grow your legal practice as Assistant Corporate Counsel at Halton Region. This position includes a mix of both barrister and solicitor work with responsibilities in the areas of litigation (both managing litigation files and representation of the Region) as well as contract drafting, legal research and the provision of legal advice to a variety of client groups. Working in a collegial team, the Assistant Corporate Counsel will provide support in one or more areas of Public Works, Facility and Infrastructure development, Finance, Public Health, Social and Community Services, Economic Development as well as general government and administration.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Drafts, reviews and co-ordinates legal documents including contracts, by-laws and litigation materials.
  • Researches, analyses, counsels and advises on legal implications in matters of law, legal procedures and policies, as well as operational and strategic decisions.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of plans and strategies to preclude or remedy anticipated legal problems arising out of day-to-day operations and projects.
  • Provides legal representation to the Region.
  • Works cooperatively with a team of lawyers and law clerks.
  • Maintains a regular awareness of activities within the Legal Services Division's scope of operations.
  • Prepares outlines and briefs to keep clients and senior management of the Region informed accordingly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications
Essential
  • The successful candidate will possess membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the practice of law, preferably with experience in municipal, public and/or administrative law.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, as well as strong analytical, research and client service skills.
 
Preferred
  • Broad general legal experience.
 
A combination of education and experience will be considered.
