Position Details: Full Time Permanent, Vacant Position
Starting Salary: starting at $99,000 (based on a 35-hour work week and commensurate with individual education and experience, as it relates to the position).
Location: Remote or hybrid in any DUC office across Canada.
Closing Deadline: May 30, 2025

What You Will Do

Reporting to the General Counsel, Governance and Corporate Secretary, the Legal Counsel will be a changemaker in supporting preservation and protection of Canada’s environment, reducing our collective carbon footprint, and supporting innovative approaches to biodiversity by providing legal research, advice and contract creation, and dispute resolution in the areas of real estate, construction, environmental, corporate, and commercial law.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Act as first point of contact on departmental requests for legal review of issues related to conservation including real property, construction, and environmental issues.
  • Negotiate new agreements as required with oversight by General Counsel.
  • Review and revise existing agreements. 
  • Assist in rewriting all standard precedents to best practice.
  • Research legal issues, write memos and provide advice nationally.
  • Manage retention of Agreements and Precedents.
  • Assist in dispute resolution related to existing conservation agreements.
  • Create collaborative working relationships across Canada with department managers and team members.
  • Prepare training materials on legal topics.
  • Support the General Counsel as needed in national matters and governance.
  • Prepare regulatory filings (e.g. annual returns).
  • May work with the General Counsel and the Manager, Risk and Compliance to manage the national privacy program, create best practice controls and processes, and review documents for freedom of information and privacy purposes.
Requirements

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited Canadian University with an LLB or JD designation and a current practice certificate in a Canadian Common Law province (Civil Law an asset).
  • At least 3 years of experience in real estate law, corporate law, commercial law. Litigation experience is also an asset 
  • Experience drafting contracts and agreements. Ability to translate legal concepts into plain language.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Power Point, Excel, Teams), Adobe, etc.
  • Excellent language and communication skills in English. Ability to communicate in French is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and quickly read and understand complex contracts and agreements.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities. 
  • Ability to manage conflicts and disputes with partners.
