Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia is currently searching for a Legal Counsel, Policy Manager to join our team in Burnaby! This is a new full-time permanent position within the growing 23-person legal department.

What You Will Be Doing
The Legal Counsel, Policy Manager develops and directs the research and policy group of the legal department. More specifically, this role is responsible for:

  • Researching and drafting legal memoranda.
  • Continually evaluating and proposing updates to the bylaws and existing policies and procedures, creating and amending new internal policies and procedures, suggesting legislative amendments and responding to emerging issues under the Professional Governance Act.
  • Managing the creation of the policy, procedures and implementation associated with the requirement of Engineers and Geoscientists BC to regulate firms under the Professional Governance Act.
  • Assisting with the legal aspects of regulating individuals and helping to guide the development of investigation, discipline and enforcement procedures as they relate to legislation and policy.
  • Assisting with the legal review of professional practice guidelines and content developed for registrants.
  • Managing 2 direct reports with accountability for hiring, training, and coaching.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

What You Bring To The Table
The successful applicant will possess the following:

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is required.
  • Member of the Law Society of BC, or eligible for immediate membership.
  • 5-7 years experience in a law firm, government, or professional regulatory body, particularly in administrative law, civil litigation or related disciplines.
  • 3-5 years experience in legislative drafting is preferred.
  • 3+ years experience managing others or supervising staff, teams, or projects.
