Alberta Blue Cross® has an opening for a permanent full time individual to join our organization as Legal Counsel in the Legal Services department. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for supporting the Legal Services team in identifying, managing, and controlling legal and operational risks within Alberta Blue Cross®

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Reporting to the General Counsel, provide strategic legal advice and guidance on a broad range of legal issues, including insurance, human rights and employment law
  • Draft and negotiate contracts and other legal documents and policies
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations that apply to Alberta Blue Cross® and implement practices for compliance, including monitoring legal and legislative changes that may impact the business
  • Assist the General Counsel in identifying and assessing legal risks and developing strategies to mitigate risk
  • Working collaboratively with support staff and other members of the organization on long-term projects

WHAT YOU WILL HAVE:

  • Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta
  • Minimum 3 years relevant post-call to the bar experience. Experience as in-house counsel is an asset, but not required
  • Experience and/or knowledge with insurance legislation preferred
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Exceptional organizational skills and an ability to handle multiple files and projects
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness and ability to learn and understand business processes and perspectives from throughout the organization
  • Must be self-motivated and energetic
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Tact, confidentiality and diplomacy
