Your role

Reporting to the Associate General Counsel and Executive Director, Business Law, as Legal Counsel II specializing in business law, you will provide solicitor services to a range of Corporation components, including the Senior Executive Team, media lines and corporate services.

You will apply your sound judgment and contract negotiation/drafting experience when providing opinions as well as reviewing, negotiating and drafting contracts in the following fields: product and service procurement, including technology; digital media business opportunities; outsourcing and distribution contracts; and real estate transactions.

You may be required to sit on cross-functional working groups for special projects. You will be advising operational areas of CBC/Radio-Canada and working with senior executives on sensitive, high-profile matters of strategic importance.

You must also monitor the work of external legal counsel retained to assist with transactional matters or legal opinions, and you may be asked to manage litigation matters with support from external counsel.

Your interpersonal and communication skills will help you promote the use of Law Department services, as well as maintain formal and informal contacts within the local legal community.

You will also assist in developing strategies and objectives for the department.

You must stay current on legislation, doctrine and jurisprudence in the field of business law.

Please note that this position will be based in Toronto or Montreal.

We Are Looking For a Candidate With The Following
  • Member of the Barreau du Québec or Ontario Bar Association.
  • Three to 8 years’ experience practising business law in a law firm or law department.
  • Proficiency in negotiating complex agreements and keen awareness of business practicalities.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills to interact with clients and vendors as well as to lead sensitive discussions aimed at concluding complicated transactions or settling business disputes.
  • Ability to show leadership, be motivated and confident, and have a professional attitude.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, prioritize effectively and handle multiple deadlines.
  • Strong client and team focus.
  • Attention to detail along with the ability to synthesize information received and provide practical, understandable legal advice to clients with varying levels of legal knowledge.
  • Ability to deal effectively with outside counsel.
  • Familiarity with real estate law an asset.
  • Bilingualism (English and French, spoken and written) an asset.
  • Good knowledge of word processing software.
