Reporting to the Vice President Legal, Buildings & Bird Capital, Bird Construction is looking for a lawyer with 2-4 years of experience to join their growing team.The positon will be responsible for ensuring Bird’s current and proposed activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations.  

This is a permanent full-time position and is based in the Mississauga, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver or other major metropolitan areas in Canada, dependent on the selected candidate's place of residence.


What You Will Be Working On

  • Help ensure Bird’s current and proposed activities, policies, business practices, and transactions comply with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate legal agreements and other documents related to a variety of construction matters to protect the organization’s legal and business interests. This will include reviewing and negotiating prime contracts, subcontracts, consulting agreements and other commercial arrangements ancillary to construction
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders within legal and risk management group and operations teams to proactively track, monitor, and resolve legal issues and disputes that may arise from existing commercial relationships
  • Provide legal and business advice focused on risk management and claims prevention
  • Coordinate delivery of legal services with other functional services, such as insurance, bonding/surety, finance and accounting and safety
  • Have carriage of small claims files.
  • Participate in analysis, investigation, negotiation and resolution of claims and disputes in a constructive manner
  • Manage external counsel where required on material claims and disputes
  • Create and deliver regular training programs to internal stakeholders and business colleagues with a focus on continuous improvement, lessons learned and new developments in construction law across Canada
  • Assist with M&A transactions
  • Travel within Canada may be required from time to time


What We Are Looking For 

  • LL.B or J.D. degree
  • Minimum of 2 years of corporate commercial or construction claims law experience specifically gained within a publicly traded company, or law firm
  • Ability to take responsibility and stay focused on objectives with a can-do-attitude
  • Experience in the construction industry, commercial claims or insurance disputes will be considered assets
  • Strong progressive performance track record
  • Experienced results-oriented and practical Lawyer
  • Independent professional; uses sound judgment and expertise to handle competing demands in a fast-paced organization
  • Outstanding organizational skills and highly detail-oriented
  • Mature influencing style dealing with a variety of issues and audiences
  • Reputation for integrity, discretion and commercial sensibility
  • Possesses leadership and managerial skills
  • Self-starter who takes initiative to complete activities and is always looking for ways to improve
