As an Administrative Law Lawyer, you will work in our Administrative Law section and have a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy within a team-oriented environment. Primary duties include:
  • Provide legal and strategic advice and opinions on a variety of administrative law matters, with a primary focus on property assessment and tax related issues under the Municipal Government Act.
  • Work proactively with members of the Assessment & Tax Business Unit to solve legal issues and facilitate Council priorities.
  • Represent The City before the Assessment Review Board and in judicial review applications/appeals.
  • Represent The City before other quasi-judicial tribunals, including the License and Community Standards Appeal Board and matters under the Livery Transport Bylaw.
  • Be cross-trained and support legal work in other Administrative Law practice areas including Labour Relations, Employment, Human Rights, Occupational Health & Safety, and Information & Privacy.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of Legal Services to ensure a consistent approach to matters.

Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and active membership or eligibility for membership with The Law Society of Alberta.
  • At least 2 years of post-call experience is required, however, 5+ years of experience is preferred.
  • Direct experience with Administrative Law, including dispute resolution and tribunal/judicial review proceedings will be considered an asset.
  • Direct experience with and/or knowledge of property assessment and tax related issues under the Municipal Government Act will be considered an asset.
  • You are a thoughtful and results oriented lawyer who has demonstrated the ability to function effectively in a technically challenging area.
  • You bring a strategic approach to the law, technical expertise, and a commitment to initiating and inspiring creative problem solving.
  • The ability to contribute to a positive work environment and team atmosphere is essential, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to manage competing interests, tight timelines and work effectively and productively with a variety of people both internal and external to the Corporation.
